Titled “Takwanaw,” the Cree word for buffalo bull, this striking 24 x 36 inch acrylic painting captures the strength, spirit, and sacred symbolism of the buffalo to the Cree people. Painted on reclaimed wood, this piece merges natural texture with expressive brushwork, echoing the resilience and power of this historically significant animal.
Using bold, loose strokes and layered textures, I aimed to convey the buffalo's raw energy and noble presence. The reclaimed wood surface enhances the earthy, organic feel of the painting, while a handcrafted reclaimed wood frame adds rustic depth and beautifully complements the vibrant hues.
An isolation coat was applied before sealing the painting with a high-gloss varnish to protect and enrich the colours. “Takwanaw” is more than a portrait—it is a tribute to the cultural and spiritual importance of the buffalo in Indigenous history, brought to life with movement, reverence, and emotion.
